Chapter 5

Flying on a griffin has to be at the top of the list of best things I’ve ever done.

Aquila was king of the griffins and touched by the Creator. Now that Cian and I had His essence, we could enter and leave any realm at will. The beings who were banished into the Hell realm couldn’t leave until the gates were unlocked. They remained bound to that world.

The Hell realm wasn’t in contact with ours but apparently a bridge existed that Artaius had used to go there and enter through a ‘back door.’

Cian and I knew from our time in the sap that Aquila would be the one to take us to the Hell realm.

We climbed higher and I could barely make out the faint outline of a honeycomb. We headed straight for a disturbance at the top of the atmosphere. Cian sat behind me and I leaned into him since we were flying straight up. I tilted my head back and looked over his shoulder at the shrinking Earth. Cian looked back as well.

“That’s what we’re fighting for,” he said lovingly.

“With everything we’ve got,” I answered.

We entered the honeycomb-shaped disturbance and it was like flying through a tube. I couldn’t see anything beyond the walls. The tube didn’t continue straight up, nor was anything about it straight. We twisted and turned right, left, up, down, diagonal. Aquila never slowed and my stomach felt as if it was in my ears. Apparently, I got motion sickness. My focus was on not puking.

Pressure built in my head and my ears popped. The vice grip on my head increased and I gasped for air.

“Long, deep, slow breaths, Morrigan,” Cian whispered in my ear. “Steady, it’s almost over.”

I slowed my breathing and the bile that rose in my throat lowered.

A sharp screech from Aquila pierced my ears and we pushed through the end of the tube, into the Hell realm.

Thankfully, we spiraled down. Aquila was probably concerned he’d be covered in vomit if he didn’t.

I understood why Hell was described as being a pit of fire. That wasn’t true, but I could see why someone would think that. I didn’t know if seers or others gifted with the sight had seen this place in order to describe it, but it was washed in the colors of fire.

The sky was a bright orange with a yellow sun much larger than ours hanging in the sky. Waves of tall red grass swayed in the breeze. Large trees twisted and turned, dotting the landscape. Their bark was bright blue. Shimmering golden leaves fluttered on their limbs. Large ponds, the color of tangerine, rippled. Spicy, unfamiliar scents hung in the warm air.

It wasn’t fire and brimstone, but the temperature was surely at least a hundred degrees. The humidity made it feel hotter. Still, this place teemed with life and wasn’t the barren wasteland most would expect.

Aquila landed in an open field. Birds chirped in the distance, but there were no signs of danger. He turned to us after we climbed from him.
